THE EARLY YEARS
The island received its name from the French due to the large number of birch trees present on the island. Detroiters could not pronounce the French name and began to call the island "Bob-lo".
The blockhouse was erected in 1786

The White Star Line purchased Sugar Island to develop it as an excursion destination, the Tashmoo was the ship used.
